Letter from Wayside - Posted August 8, 2008

Forwarded is an email from Ms. Nina Moseley, Chief Operating Officer for Wayside Christian Mission that I recently received.  After receipt of her email we had a telephone conversation and I invited Ms. Moseley to join us at the Association's general meeting on Monday, August 18, and speak to the organization's plans in regard to the possible acquisition and utilization of the MercyAcademy site.

The Association's general meeting will commence around 7:00 PM immediately following the Board of Director's meeting at 6:00 PM.  Both meetings will take place at the MetropolitanCommunityChurch, the usual site for OHNA's meetings.

Obviously, this is an important matter for our neighborhood and certainly would have an impact on our neighborhood.  Neighbors are urged to attend the meeting and receive a first-hand briefing from Wayside. Attending will make you better informed if this matter proceeds.  In addition, the OHNA Board needs to get a handle on what the neighborhood consensus would be regarding this possible Wayside initiative

Dear Mr. Haddox,

Please allow me to introduce myself.  I am Nina Moseley, Chief Operating Officer of Wayside Christian Mission. I have unsuccessfully tried to reach you by phone, but Walter Munday has given me this email address.
We would like to know if you could allow us a brief amount of time on your upcoming Original Highlands Neighborhood Association meeting to discuss Wayside Christian Mission’s future plans for our Women’s and Family’s campus that we are losing on East Market Street.  There is a possibility that we would like to move our family and women’s programs into the MercyAcademy property which is available for sale.  However, in order to pursue such a venture, we would like to have acceptance from the appropriate neighborhood associations beforehand.
If we were to purchase this property, our usage would be as a campus for our women and family programs, and our state-licensed child development center which serves homeless preschoolers, six weeks old up to 5 years old, who are staying in any Louisville area family shelter.  Our men’s programs will remain at our 432 East Jefferson Street location.
We have reviewed the property twice now and, if we were to pursue purchase of this property, we do not anticipate any changes to the outside of the property other than possibly adding an outside elevator shaft to the 4-story school building.  This building was built in 1901 and would need an elevator to meet ADA compliance.  However, it is located in such a way that should we need to do an outside shaft rather than an inside one, it could be located in the courtyard side of the building and would not be visible from the East Broadway side.  The only other major renovations we would need to perform to adapt the property would be to add sprinklers and additional showers / bathrooms.
Please let me know whether you could possibly allow me a couple minutes on your next agenda to speak to your board about this possibility.  We want to seek acceptance from the various groups before we make a final decision.  I do know there are some other homeless providers interested in this property, and their clientele would include the male population.  I am on the agenda for the East Broadway Business Association for their August 12 meeting at the Louisville Antique Mall.  I have also asked PHNA if I could seek acceptance at their next meeting August 11.

Thank you for your time.  I look forward to hearing from you.
